Skill of the Week: Risk Taking

Here at The Ferns Academy, we encourage our children to constantly move out of their learning comfort zones, as we believe that by doing this, children constantly progress and maintain a very high level of enthusiasm for their learning. To do this, children will obviously need to take calculated risks in their learning, i.e. they will need to explore new avenues and answer new questions in their learning which they will not have encountered before. We also encourage children to take calculated risks to aid their social development; children are encouraged to be open to making new friends in school, even if new people can be daunting to them. This process can be described as risk management; discreetly, we teach our children to manage the risks they take in school in order to maximise and take ownership of their own personal and intellectual development.

Some of the questions you may want to ask your children in this week's circle time include:

  • What does the word 'risk' mean?
  • When have you taken a risk before in our learning or outside of school? What was the result of this risk?
  • Why is it important to take small risks in our learning and within our relationships in school?
